Participatory forestry improves mangrove forest management in Kenya

Participatory forestry has been recognized as a tool for improving tropical forest management. The current study assessed the impacts of participatory management (PFM) on structure and regeneration mangrove at Gazi Bay, Kenya. Data were collected along belt transects perpendicular to waterline in both co-managed state-managed forests. Basal area standing density significantly higher forests (16 m 2 /ha 4 341 tree/ha) compared state (eastern block 10.3 673 trees/ha; western 6.2 436 trees/ha). There ( p = 0.0068) densities merchantable poles community-managed Natural patterns deemed adequate support recovery results demonstrate that community participation contributes improved is agreement with principles sustainable
